The Whistler XTR-550 Radar Laser Detector is an affordable means of protection with a cost of right at $100. The incredibly bright LED display characteristic of Whistler is found on this unit, but there are also two separate blue LED lights found on the top of the detector that flash along with any alerts received. Combined with Whistler’s real voice technology, any user is virtually guaranteed to notice any warnings. The black design is sleek and easily concealable should the need arise. A windshield mount makes it possible to install quickly and move from vehicle to vehicle. 
Perhaps one of the most important features of the Whistler XTR-550 is the 360 degree protection that is provided by both radar and laser detection. As the signal becomes stronger, the display will change and the alert will also become louder.
The Whistler XTR-550 also offers a VG-2 mode that renders the radar laser detector virtually undetectible. When an alert is received that a VG-2 detector is nearby, the system shuts itself off. Although a user must realize no new alerts will be generated, the fact remains that only law enforcement vehicles will trigger this mode in the first place.
The city and highway modes are sure to be appreciated by any owner of the XTR-550. Even though the highway mode must be activated to take advantage of the longest range possible, the city mode will allow many false signals to be avoided. Closed circuit televisions and automatic doors may set off the detector if it is not in city mode.
The Whistler XTR-550 is a very inexpensive way to protect oneself from tickets arising from radar or laser traps. The VG-2 mode allows users to completely conceal the unit if necessary and not fear confiscation by law enforcement. The XTR-550 is best for drivers that spend most of their time on the highway, but the city mode will help filter out some of the false alarms if activated properly.
